Jeremy Hunt advocates Chinese Medicine on NHS

In an article in the Daily Mail online today, Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt is urging the availability of Chinese Medicine - which includes herbal medicine, acupuncture and massage, on the NHS.  He states that only remedies and treatments which have been scientifically proven to be effective should be offered, but that a greater acceptance of other types of medicine will be helpful to patients.

The article states that Chinese herbal medicine contributes to the destruction of species, such as the white rhino, however in the UK only plant based herbal remedies are permitted and used by herbal medicine practitioners.  These are all processed and sold by registered and audited herbal companies based in the UK

At the Albany Street Clinic, our Chinese Medical herbalist, Fiona, is a vital and integral part of The Natural Fertility Centre as well as managing many other conditions with herbal medicine.  She studied herbal medicine for 3 years, on top of the 3 year acupuncture training and her qualification as a Registered General Nurse.

Herbal medicine, and Chinese herbal medicine, often get a bad press but they constitute the origins of our current 'bio medicine' (aspirin, for example, comes from the bark of the willow tree) and has been used effectively, and safely, for centuries.  If you are thinking about trying herbal medicine, make sure your practitioner is properly qualified and accredited.
